RTA's WeGo Star, formerly known as the Music City Star, is a commuter train on the 32-mile Lebanon to downtown Nashville route.
There are six stations (soon to be seven) at the following locations:
Refurbished cars entered service in August 2020. Other upgrades in the Year 2020 include station platform and parking lot improvements and a simplified fare collection system. Coordinated MTA bus transfers are available at Riverfront Station to and from several key Nashville areas including Vanderbilt and St. Thomas. How the Music City Star Benefits Nashville:
- Fuel Conservation and Better Air Quality - every commuter who takes the train and/or bus to work instead of driving consumes less gasoline. This translates into fewer hydrocarbons released into the air. The Music City Star's 1,000 daily riders help the air in the region.
- Sustainable, Efficient, and Profitable Real Estate Development - commuter rail encourages better real estate development. Business districts near train stations help attract higher density real estate development that fosters job growth, tax revenue, and livable communities. The new development at Hamilton Springs on the Music City Star route is one example.
- More Productive Workforce - commuter rail helps takes the pain out of getting to work and back. People on the train take it easy while rush hour drivers are frustrated by traffic jams, accidents, construction, road rage, and other hassles. Workers who take the train are more at ease when they arrive at work compared to people who fight daily rush hour traffic.
- Better Sense of Community - daily commuters get to know each another on board the trains. This is true even in the world's largest cities. Since 2006 the daily Music City Star Riders have grown together as one big family. Passengers know each other by name. We hear stories about daily commuters inviting fellow commuters to weddings, graduation parties, birthday parties, and baptisms. There are stories of commuters banding together and reaching out other commuters in times of sickness and distress. These relationships could never be cultivated on an Interstate highway! Commuter rail makes any big city feel more like a home town!
- Less wear and tear on cars - big city traffic can turn a new car into a worn out used car in no time flat! The wear and tear on tires and brakes alone is enough to strain the family budget. Commuters who take the train come home to a car that's been resting and taking it easy all day. Cars that take it easy cost less to drive and have greater resale value at trade-in time! Commuter rail can help take the pain out of owning and driving a car in the Nashville area.
Where to Next? Clarksville maybe?
Tennessee's 5th largest city could be the next big step for commuter rail in Tennessee. A proposal to expand the Music City Star along a new route in this direction has wide appeal, but the idea needs our voice, our vote, and our support! We encourage you to contact RTA and your elected officials to push this proposal to the front burner! Click here for a Nashville Ledger article from November 2017 that discussing the idea in detail. |
